Luis Gonçalves

In May 2006 in Portugal on a ministry tour I had the honour and privilege of staying in the home of Luis and Carla Gonçalves and their wonderful family. Luis and I had never met before this, but by the end of the trip we had become good friends and I had found another professional musician with the same heart for worship as my own. On this page there are some details on Luis and his first album. He is going to launch a second album soon and details will be announced here as soon as it is available.

Luis Gonçalves was born in Lisbon in 1971. His first musical studies started in the Loures Fire Department Band. He then studied in Lisbon's National Conservatory under Emidio Coutinho and Hermenegildo Campos. By the age of 16, he had started to play in the main Portuguese symphonic orchestras. His career, dedicated to classical music, has led him to play under the regency of several international maestros , as a soloist. In his national career, he regularly asked to play in theatres, opera houses, television and audio studios, playing also for several Portuguese artists. He has also toured with Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Mirella Freni, and many others. In 1989, he joined the Portuguese Navy Band and today holds the position of 1st Sergeant Musician as 1st Trombone soloist. He is also Musical Director and Worship Leader at his home fellowship "Zoe Church" in Lisbon (www.zoe.pt). He is married to Carla and they have four children.

Luis's first album "Trombowater - Luis plays Chris" is a beautifully arranged instrumental album by his friend Jorge Salgueiro (see www.jorgesalgueiro.com). This album originated from Luis's friendship with Chris Bowater. As Luis says in the album concerning Chris 񓟮 was the year I first had the opportunity to play with you. Since then the desire to know you better has grown more and more. However, that could only be possible if I worked beside you. Over the past four years, the experiences we have shared, whilst touring the UK, have been the best of my life. Knowing you and your family has made me understand your music more deeply. Love and relationships are your way of life. It will always be a great pleasure to play with you. I believe you are one of the best composers of our time."

The heart of Luis is expressed when in the album he says "To you, God, the tower of my life. Without you, none of this could exist. Thank you for giving me this gift. Because of it, I have found the best way to express myself, the Music."
